STEVE WESTON

Former CEO of Mortgages

Session and presentation
Steve will play a key role as host and facilitator of The Adviser’s UK Study Tour, helping to connect and translate the two markets while reinforcing the opportunity for Australian mortgage businesses to learn from their UK counterparts. In particular, Steve will convey how our local mortgage industry may look after further regulatory reform based on the UK experience – and the likely impact (positive and negative) this will have on brokers and lenders.

Steve WestonAbout Steve
Steve is an internationally-recognised financial services executive who was most recently CEO of Mortgages at Barclays, a post he held for two years before deciding to return to his native Australia.

In his role as CEO, Steve was instrumental in developing the bank’s mortgage business. He also held other leadership positions at Barclays including as managing director of retail lending and as a member of the personal and corporate banking executive committee and the bank’s senior leadership group.

Before moving to the UK, Steve played an influential role shaping Australia’s mortgage sector as general manager of broker platforms at NAB – where he was responsible for the bank’s three mortgage aggregation businesses PLAN, Choice and FAST.

Prior to this he spent three years as general manager of residential and commercial lending at Challenger plus an additional four years with St George Bank, where he was a general manager working across a number of its mortgage-related platforms.


MIGUEL SARD

Miguel SardAbout Miguel
Miguel Sard heads up Santander’s UK mortgage division, a role he has held since 2013 when the bank’s mortgage product and marketing responsibilities across its retail and intermediary channels were pooled in one department.

As managing director of this division he is responsible for Santander’s entire UK mortgage proposition, including product development, distribution and the customer experience.

Prior to this appointment, Miguel was Santander’s managing director for intermediaries, a post he held for over five years. In his earlier career at the bank, he was CEO of its insurance services business.


PAUL SMEE

Council of Mortgage Lenders

The journey of mortgage regulation in the UK and the Financial Conduct Authority’s current key areas of focus on mortgage lending, particularly with respect to intermediary distribution.

Paul SmeeAbout Paul
Paul became director general of the Council of Mortgage Lenders in August 2011. Since then, he has been engaged in regulatory matters and the Mortgage Market Review, the application of macro-prudential tools to the housing market and in a variety of government-backed schemes to support the housing market.

Previously, he was chief executive of UK Payments and the Payments Council. He was involved with the introduction of the Faster Payments Service in 2008, the first new payment system in the UK for 25 years, and in the production of the UK’s National Payments Plan.

Paul was the founding director general of the Association of IFAs, the representative body for the community of independent financial advisers which was formed in 1999. He also was instrumental in the formation of the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries in 2003.

Paul has also worked at the Department of Trade and Industry, the Stock Exchange, the Association of British Insurers and the Independent Television Commission.

Peter heads up the Mortgage Advice Bureau (MAB), one of the UK’s top financial and mortgage advice businesses.

He started MAB in 2000 with just 10 brokers. The business listed on London’s Stock Exchange in 2014 and has a current market cap of £166 million. Peter has evolved the business with a focus on growth and diversification, including through a number of key strategic investments, joint ventures and acquisitions.

With more than 800 advisers settling approximately £10 billion of mortgages per annum, MAB is an award-winning mortgage broker with access to over 90 UK lenders and more than 12,000 products.

As a leading network for mortgage intermediaries, MAB has over 130 appointed representative firms and around 900 agency branches – which are a key source of loan lead generation.

Prior to establishing MAB, Peter held senior roles at Legal & General. During his almost 30-year career in mortgage and financial services, he has also had management roles with Albany Life and John Charcol.

Peter has received the British Mortgage Awards’ Broker Business Leader of the Year award for three consecutive years and was Mortgage Strategy’s Mortgage Strategist of the Year (2014 and 2015) and Financial Reporter’s Most Influential Person (2013).

In his role with London & Country Mortgages, where he was worked since 1993, he has helped grow the business from just three staff to over 550 in 2016.

He was the principal architect of, and responsible for, London & Country Mortgages’ market-leading IT platform and is an expert in the integration of regulatory and sales processes.

He is a regular contributor to industry debate and was the first elected chairman of the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries (AMI). He was the Mortgage Strategy Awards’ Mortgage Personality of the Year in 2016.

Prior to London & Country, Patrick worked for Britannia Building Society and UCB.

Stephen SmithAbout Stephen
Stephen is a stalwart of the UK mortgage industry and is current chairman of mortgage club Legal & General – a firm he has worked with for 21 years.

He has held senior positions within the UK mortgage industry for over 35 years, working with mortgage lenders, administrators and intermediaries, including Abbey National, the Mortgage Corporation and Homeloan Management Limited (HML).

In addition to his current role he sits on the board of four housing-related subsidiary companies of the Legal & General Group. Stephen is also on the board of the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries (AMI).  

He was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Mortgage Awards in 2009.

Sidney is the current intermediary partnerships director within the mortgage arm of Barclays and a veteran of 20 years with the financial institution.

As well as his senior role directing the bank’s mortgage intermediary business, he has worked within Barclays’ branch network and business banking division as well as in marketing and property development.

As head of the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries (AMI), Robert is a lead voice and advocate, representing the views and interests of UK mortgage brokers.

The AMI works closely with government, regulators and policymakers to ensure the UK’s mortgage industry meets the highest standards of professionalism while driving the deployment of mortgage brokers through lobbying and driving media engagement.

Prior to his role with the AMI, Robert was director of the Association of Independent Financial Advisers (AIFA), a role he held for over five years. He has also held senior roles with Abbey, as head of advice development, as well as with HSBC private banking.
