With a record proportion of Australian borrowers using brokers to access mortgages – around 74 per cent, according to industry statistics – and record volumes of loans being written, The Adviser sought to find out the numbers behind Australia’s leading loan writers.

As such, The Adviser’s Elite Broker Ranking 2024, run in partnership with ANZ, shines a spotlight on the crème de la crème of the broking industry, celebrating excellence among top performers across Australia.

In this inaugural edition, we reveal the Elite Residential Brokers responsible for writing the largest volume of home loans in the country.

The numbers behind the Elite Brokers

This year’s ranking not only celebrates individual achievements, but also highlights the collective strength of the residential broker community. Brokers who excel in this environment typically exhibit a combination of deep market knowledge, strong networking abilities, and a commitment to client service. They navigate the ever-changing landscape of mortgage products, interest rates, and regulatory requirements with skill, ensuring that their clients receive the best possible outcomes. And they have built bulletproof teams and systems to help them write a growing volume of business. As the industry evolves, these top performers are also increasingly adopting new technologies and methodologies that further improve client experience.

Indeed, the numbers speak volumes about the impact these top brokers have on the Australian mortgage landscape and helping Australians in achieving their home ownership dreams.

Collectively, the top 100 Elite Brokers – Residential wrote an astounding $13.04 billion in mortgages in the financial year 2024, reflecting their dominance in the market.

Leading the pack for highest dollar amount was Stephen Michaels from Catalyst Advisers, who wrote a massive $348 million of home loans in FY24, closely followed by Chris Bates from newly formed elite brokerage, Flint.

But while house prices and mortgage volumes differ across the country, what is the same across all the Elite Brokers in the ranking is the huge number of home loans they’ve been able to settle.

There were a total of 20,703 mortgages settled by the top 100 brokers in the last financial year, with the brokers writing an average of 207 home loans over the year.

Special mention goes to Deslie Taylor from Mortgage Choice Ormeau, who wrote the largest number of home loans of any broker, at a whopping 551 loans in FY24.

As such, these brokers exemplify that not only are they generating a large volume of business, but they’re also masters of efficiency and have mastered how to navigate the complexities of the mortgage market quickly.

Methodology of the ranking

To ensure the integrity and credibility of the Elite Broker Ranking, a robust methodology was employed. Undertaken by Agile Market Intelligence on behalf of The Adviser, brokers were invited to submit data regarding the number of home loans settled, the value of these loans, and the average size of loans written for the 2024 financial year.

Each broker was required to provide evidence supporting their submission, which were meticulously verified. The final ranking was determined by aggregating the three metrics – total value, number of loans, and average loan size – allowing for a comprehensive assessment of performance across the board.

The significance of the Elite Broker Ranking extends beyond mere numbers. It serves as a valuable resource for both consumers and industry professionals, helping buyers and sellers identify trustworthy and high-performing brokers.

With impressive statistics highlighting their contributions to the mortgage market, these Elite Brokers are not only driving significant financial transactions, but also shaping the future of home financing in Australia.

In celebrating the achievements of these Elite Brokers, we honour the spirit of innovation, dedication, and client focus that drives the industry forward.

Methodology

Undertaken by Agile Market Intelligence on behalf of The Adviser, the Elite Broker Ranking – Residential 2024 asked brokers to provide the number of home loans settled, value of home loans settled, and average size of the home loans written over the 2024 financial year (ending June 2024).

Brokers were asked to provide evidence of the numbers submitted, which were then verified.

The sum of the three rankings determined the final overall rank for the category.
