Held in Sydney, the event was created and developed by Finsure & LoanKit BDM Noushig Megerditchian, and it was launched by NSW Premier and NSW Liberal Party Leader Gladys Berejiklian MP.
Speaking at the event, Ms Berejiklian shared her story of moving from retail banking at CBA to becoming Premier of NSW, the challenges she faced along the way and the qualities she needed to overcome them.
The Premier of NSW also commended the company for being “cutting-edge in its performance but also cutting-edge in having a forum like this”.
She said: “Companies like [Finsure], in promoting the status of women and gender equality issues, is to be commended, especially as we celebrate International Women’s Day this week, and we all know that while we’re making strides, there is of course more to do.
“I think initiatives like this bring to the attention of everybody the challenges and opportunities that exist for gender equality in the workplace.”
Ms Berejiklian highlighted that Balance Sheet success, companies that have more gender equality in senior leadership positions and board positions do better as well.
“So [even if] just from a business perspective, gender equality gets a better outcome,” the NSW Premier said.
The Premier added: “Let’s reduce the barriers, allow more women to participate in industries and workplaces but also ensure that that also links to cultural change and knocking down the barriers of unconscious bias.
“It’s when men actually support changes in the workplace that change happens. It’s through [their] leadership and support that change can happen.”
Finsure’s managing director, John Kolenda, said that he was “glad to lead the way” and “proud to promote equality, opportunity, diversity and inclusion of women within our great industry”.
He added: “It is something that I’m really passionate about and want to promote further, so as an organisation, we look at ways we can attract more women into the industry and also help develop them into some of our industry leaders.”
Natalie Sheehan, chief operating officer at Better Choice, spoke to delegates about pushing limits, achieving more and the concept of mind over matter; while Mhairi MacLeod, principal of Astute Ability Finance Group, relived her experience of overcoming sexism in the asset finance industry to become the head of a leading asset finance company.
