The outlook for housing affordability remains bleak as the national population grows at a record pace and construction activity lags.
Australia’s population grew by a record 102,000 in the first quarter of 2008, higher than any previous reading, ABS data showed yesterday.

Australia’s population has now increased by 1.6 per cent since March 2007.
HIA chief executive of policy Chris Lamont said the numbers were driven by record immigration levels which had doubled in just four years.
He said the figures highlighted the clear need for improved housing supply.
“The lack of affordable dwellings in Australia continues to reduce housing affordability. A massive boost in the supply of affordable housing for both the public and private sector is now desperately needed,” Mr Lamont said.
