Zone Homes – featuring two independent living areas under the one roof – could become the next big trend as Australia faces ongoing housing challenges in the decade ahead.
According to Archicentre ACT & NSW state manager Angus Kell, the Zone Home is an extension of the granny flat concept, different only in that the accommodation is all under one roof and designed so it can be two separate entities or one big home.

“By designing the Zone Home with two separate entries and facilities for cooking, laundry and bathroom areas... a new home buyer can build in a rental return to help pay for the new home, which can be expanded at a later time into a full sized home by a simple renovation,” Mr Kell said.
“The concept... is a practical way of providing a flexible housing design solution which would be extremely attractive in the current financial turmoil,” he said.
