A record number of first home buyers entered the market in April, new figures show.

According to the federal minister for housing Tanya Plibersek, 18,736 first home buyers took out first home owners grants in April – the strongest take up since the beefed-up grants were launched in October last year.

April’s figures bring the total number of first home buyers to have capitalised on the government’s first home incentives to 78,000 since October.

New South Wales’ first home buyers have been most active with 27,185 grants taken out, followed by 17,081 in Queensland and 16,324 in Victoria.

“The First Home Owners Boost, combined with low interest rates has brought first home buyers into the market in record numbers,” Ms Plibersek commented yesterday.
