First home buyers set a record in May with more grants paid out than ever before, NSW premier Nathan Rees said yesterday.

With $178 million in grants and stamp duty cuts benefitting around 7,300 first home buyers across the state Mr Rees said May was the third record month for first home buyers in a row.

Compared to the 3,859 grants dispatched in May 2008, first home buyer activity was up by more than 90 per cent.

The top five suburbs where demand for the grants was strongest were all in western Sydney, with first home buyers in Liverpool topping the list with 104 grants or $2.96 million paid in benefits. Campbelltown, Wentworthville, Parramatta and Blacktown followed.

“We’re getting more young families into their first homes than ever before and helping them get on with establishing their lives,” Mr Rees said.
