The REIA has put forward a proposal to political parties and independent senators, requesting support for a comprehensive housing policy.

“The areas that we are looking for action on are the First Home Owners Grant (FHOG), housing affordability, mandatory disclosure of energy efficiency ratings, national property taxation framework and the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) Guidelines,” said REIA president David Airey.

According to Mr Airey, the REIA is calling on the government to retain negative gearing in its current form for the purpose of property investment.

In addition, Mr Airey said he would like the government to not unjustifiably penalise agents for the actions of unscrupulous buyers; or put agents in a position of vetting buyers.

“We have written to all political parties and independent senators seeking support for these specific policy initiatives and I’m ready to discuss our policies at any time,” said Mr Airey.

“The REIA welcomes the opportunity to present proposals for inclusion in a specific housing policy which is aimed at contributing to Australia’s continuing strong economic development, addressing the supply of housing and improving housing affordability.”
