A large proportion of young Australians are avoiding paying rent, choosing instead to stay at home longer and save for a deposit, a new survey has found.

The survey of 1,000 Gen-Yers by Rams Home Loans revealed 71 per cent claim never to have rented a property, while 76 per cent admitted staying at home longer to avoid paying rent, preferring to save for a deposit.

There has been a long-standing trend towards extended living in the parental home before leaving to rent, RAMS Home Loans’ CEO Melos Sulicich told the Herald Sun.

“What we are now increasingly seeing is younger Australians using this time to save for their own home instead and avoiding renting,” he said.
