A Senate Select Committee chaired by Liberal senator Marise Payne has recommended that stamp duty exemptions be offered to all first homebuyers and retirees looking to down size.
The recommendation was in response to Australia’s record housing affordability low.
Alongside changes to stamp duty the committee also suggested that first homeowners that chose to buy a new property receive a larger grant than the $7,000 currently offered to ease housing supply pressures.
