Housing affordability should be redefined as a ‘chronic disease’ and a national health style strategy implemented to alleviate pressure on working families, according to managing director of Archicentre, Robert Caulfield.
“There has been an urgent need for at least two years in light of the rising living costs and interest rates for the government to reform its current tax system on housing, including Land Tax and Stamp Duty with greater cuts,” said Mr Caulfield.

Mr Caulfield said that as the Federal government moves towards national programs for the treatment of chronic diseases – such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes – it should consider the health of borrowers along the same line.
“Land affordability requires a similar approach as for many people it will increasingly become a matter of life and death,” said Mr Caulfield.
