Lack of affordable housing keeps Gen Ys with mum and dad

Data from the ABS yesterday revealed a rise in the number of young people living at home.

The proportion of Generation Ys living with their parents surpassed 50 per cent in 2006.

Housing Industry Association (HIA) chief economist Harley Dale said lack of affordable housing was forcing young people to remain living with their parents.

“If you’re in your twenties, on a low to middle income and looking to buy a home, it’s becoming virtually impossible,” he said.

“Gen Ys are still living at home with mum and dad. The reason may be they are trying to save  a deposit, or because they simple can’t afford the soaring cost of rent.”
