Stop emailing and start selling: productivity expert

A productivity expert has urged brokers to email less and delegate more if they want to grow their sales.

Andrew May said many brokers make the mistake of sending pointless emails and engaging in low-level tasks when they should be focusing on strategy and building their sales pipeline.

“We’re often wired up 24/7 and available for everybody. There are times during the day when I think it’s a really good idea to get off the grid and focus on the high-level work,” he told The Adviser.

“Get really clear about what drives your business – what are the things you need to spend more time doing? – and try to cut out the crap.”

Mr May is a former national 1,500m runner who has worked with Olympic athletes, the Sydney Swans and the Australian cricket team.

He said three key lessons that brokers could learn from top athletes were to set clear goals; to take recovery seriously; and to build strong support networks.

Mr May will share his productivity secrets at the Better Business Summit, a roadshow set to tour Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth later in February and through into March.

“We’re going to go through what’s called the science of high performance. We’re going to look at psychology, which is the way you think; productivity, which is the way you work; recovery, which is the way you balance stress; and physiology, which is the way you eat and move,” he said.
