Young brokers 'hungrier' for success

One broker believes the industry’s younger generation has a hunger for business that is having a positive impact on their referral networks.

Thomas Hawley of Shore Financial told The Adviser that he has plans to settle $130 million and train four people over 2015-16.

“The experience that we have at Shore Financial is that our young generation seems to be a lot hungrier, a lot more willing to chase business than some of the older guys,” Mr Hawley said.

“I don’t think there’s any negative around that for the older guys but I think it’s just simply because when you’re mid-20s, early-20s, whatever it is, you’re really trying your best to make a mark on the world and get ahead.

“What we’ve found is that a lot of the referral networks, a lot of the real estate agents, accountants, everyone that we work with, really responds well to working with younger guys and girls because the feedback we’re getting is that they respond faster, they chase the business a lot more, they’re accessible a bit more.”

Mr Hawley added that the internet has been a key driver in young brokers getting ahead.

“The great thing is clients want to be connected to someone all the time. They want multiple points of contact whether it is email, social media, LinkedIn and text message,” he said.

“The opportunity for young people in the industry is absolutely massive and obviously as time goes on it actually gets bigger and bigger because the technology is such a huge part of it.”

Mr Hawley said the greatest thing about being a broker is helping people where the banks can’t.

“The huge issue with the public is they think just because one bank won’t do it, none of the other banks will do it,” he said.

“A lot of the reward I feel is when you really blow someone away with either just giving them absolutely awesome service or getting something done for them that might change their life for the future.”

To show its continued support of the broking industry’s future leaders, The Adviser, in partnership with Citi, will host an exciting new event to celebrate the top 30 brokers under 30.

The Rising Stars event will be held this Friday 6 November and aims to bring together Australia’s best and brightest for an evening of networking, socialising and celebrating as we reveal the Young Broker of the Year 2015.
