The Andrews Labor government has confirmed that Collingwood and South Yarra will be home to new social and affordable houses under the Big Housing Build.

Following on from this commitment, the state government has now revealed two new areas that will be the location for 480 new social and affordable homes.
The new sites add to the Big Housing Build projects already under way at Ascot Vale, Ashburton, Flemington, Hawthorn, Heidelberg West and North Richmond.
Collingwood
Wellington Street in Collingwood is expected to be the location for 150 new homes.
The new homes will be built alongside existing public housing and will not require tenants to relocate.
Architecture firm Fieldwork Projects have been appointed as the principal design consultants for the Collingwood project.
Community consultation is expected to start imminently, with existing tenants encouraged to have a say on the project designs.
South Yarra
The second location is Simmons Street site in South Yarra, where 330 homes will be built.
The masterplanning process is also expected to take place in the next few weeks, with residents encouraged to have their say.
Architecture firm Hayball is reportedly “updating the masterplan for community consultation and getting ready for development work to commence”.
The phase one works aim to see “the entire site reinvigorated”, according to the Victorian government.
‘More shelter for vulnerable Victorians’
According to the Andrews government, the two projects will generate more than 2,000 new jobs.
Overall, the Big Housing Build aims to deliver more than 12,000 new homes across Victoria, create 10,000 jobs per year over the next four years, and boost Victoria’s social housing supply by 10 per cent.
The government highlighted that it would therefore not only help provide more shelter for “vulnerable Victorians who need it” but also support the state’s economic recovery.
Minister for Housing Richard Wynne commented: “We’re getting on with building housing where it’s needed most in locations like Collingwood and South Yarra – close to school, employment opportunities, health services and transport.”
