A mortgage broker, who allegedly defrauded up to $5 million from his clients, has had his day in court.

Samer Hraiki appeared in Central Local Court yesterday on charges of deceptive conduct as well as traffic-related matters.

According to Hraiki’s lawyer, the broker encountered financial difficulties when developing a property in Kings Cross.

Prosecutor Karl Prince said Hraiki had threatened clients who suggested they would expose his conduct to the police. It is alleged that Hraiki had taken more than $490,000 from one victim.

Hraiki was refused bail and will face court again on July 23.
