Top brokers struggle with staffing

Recruiting and retaining staff continues to be a huge bugbear for some of Australia’s leading brokers.

Speaking to The Adviser, the 2013 Australian Broking Awards' Residential Broker of the Year and Australian Broker of the Year, Warren Dworcan of Rate Detective Finance, said finding quality staff to add to his team was his biggest concern.

“I’m constantly looking for young people who don’t have that much experience but want to get into the industry,” Mr Dworcan said.

“You generally find some people have experience and are strong in certain areas but need help in others. That’s why I try to tailor staff development for each person individually.”

The 2013 Finance Broker of the Year, Justin Doobov from Intelligent Finance, also considers staffing his biggest business hurdle.

Mr Doobov said he values passion and attention to detail above technical skills and experience.

“We look for people with no experience but they have to have that passion and attention to detail and good customer service skills. From there, we will then teach them our way,” he said.

Founder of Pink Finance Nicole Cannon said devoting enough time to staff development was a real struggle.

"I need to give them the energy and time that they need to start building up their business, whilst not compromising my own business at the same time,” she said.
