After months of collecting figures and data, The Adviser can exclusively reveal the winner of the second annual Young Broker of the Year ranking.

With just four years’ experience, the title of The Adviser Young Broker of the Year 2013 was awarded to James Chatfield of Chatfield Consulting, after writing a phenomenal $88.25 million in the 2012/2013 financial year.

The 26 year-old Western Australia-based broker managed to settle 249 loans for an average loan size of $354,457.

In one week alone he will sit down for 16 client meetings, some stretching to an hour long while others last as long as three hours.

“I would work on average a 12-hour day, but lately I’ve tried to keep that to five days a week – giving myself a weekend to recharge,” he said.

According to Mr Chatfield, ensuring clients are educated in the broking process is the key to his success.

“I would say my point of difference is that we take all our clients through an in-depth education process, no matter where they are up to in their property journey,” he said.

“Whether it is their first property or their 60th property, we make sure they understand the process and what is available to them.”

Vibha Coburn, managing director head of mortgages at Citi Australia, who partnered the initiative, said the robust figures from the industry's newest brokers is sure to keep the broker proposition strong in the coming decades.

“New figures from JP Morgan and Fujitsu found the broker market share has climbed from 43 per cent at the end of 2011 to 46 per cent in 2013," she said.

“Moving forward, we expect to see this statistic climb even higher, which is why it is so important the industry has a good group of successful young recruits to keep the broking channel going strong.

“This year, I am pleased to say the industry has some fantastic examples of high achieving young brokers who are incredibly passionate about broking. There are a few familiar names from last year and excitingly, some new talented names.”
