Jailed broker permanently banned

A Western Australia-based mortgage broker has been permanently banned by ASIC after defrauding clients to fund a mormon utopia.

Catherine Anne Thompson of Mortgage Miracles Pty Limited was convicted of defrauding 24 investors of more than $4 million earlier this year to fund a fictitious ‘Mormonville’ housing village, and is currently serving a five-year jail sentence.

Between 2007 and 2008, Ms Thompson convinced her clients, including friends and members of her church, to part with hundreds of thousands of dollars for an investment scheme.

ASIC deputy chairman Peter Kell said the nature of the offences required drastic action.

“People working in the credit industry must demonstrate high standards of honesty and integrity. Ms Thompson’s conduct fell well short of those standards, showing a persistent pattern of lying to people who trusted and relied on her.

“This banning means that Ms Thompson cannot re-enter the credit and finance industry.”

During her court case, Ms Thompson claimed the fictitious facility would provide a physical and spiritual home for elderly parishioners in Canning Vale.

However, Ms Thompson used the money to fund her own property portfolio and pay the promised 17.5 per cent returns, with the Ponzi-style scheme eventually collapsing in 2008.

 •
so please explain how they can't or won't STOP the likes of Mark Whittingham. When they can stop this one, not that I approve of what she don't, he is no different and should be in jail.

 •
Yes, there is something really wrong with the justice system. You get more for lying/ stealing then you do murder. So there saying it's better to KILL someone then is to lie or steal from them. The only justice done here is the life time sentence to family of the murdered person receive. It's so wrong. It really re-affirms my belief system now. <br /><br />"THE LAW IS AN ASS, BIG TIME"..... It really needs to be thrown out and started right from the beginning. And put in put real justice. Send to jail the criminals with no parole. Do the crime, pay with time.

 •
Agree with Davo. What difference does this penalty make to the people who have lost their money? Is this retribution supposed to give us all a nice warm feeling that the regulators have our backs covered? Are potential fraudsters going to say "Oops I better not do the wrong thing"? ASIC do us all a favour and shut the gate before the horse bolts. Prevention is better than cure.

 •
The criminal justice system has locked her up and ASIC finally catch up and decide she's probably not a fit and proper person. Way to go ASIC, that'll learn her!
