Top brokers are education fanatics: Michael Russell

Mortgage Choice's chief executive has revealed that the top brokers with whom he has worked do more than the minimum amount of PD hours.

"Over the past 15 years, I've worked closely with over 3,000 brokers, and one thing I've learned is that successful brokers all share the same attributes," Michael Russell told The Adviser.

Those attributes include a focus on professional development, an incredible work ethic, a passion for customer service and a willingness to accept responsibility for their actions, he said.

"It all sounds like common sense, but it's only the successful brokers who share those attributes," he said.

Mr Russell said top brokers do more than just attend all possible industry and aggregator events.

Despite being time-poor, they also actively seek out other educational opportunities such as public speaking or business administration courses, he added.

The Adviser's reigning Young Broker of the Year, Eric Cui, partly attributed his success to a commitment to improving his education.

Mr Russell said another trait of top brokers is a continual focus on cutting out waste and increasing profitability.

"It's no surprise that these businesses often run very efficient back offices," he said.
