Ms Hambleton-O’Grady, who joined the industry as a broker in 2001, told The Adviser that having a mentor guiding her during her first few months “was probably the best thing that happened” for her career.
“I hadn’t come from a banking background, so having a mentor even for a few months was why I stayed, because I knew there were people out there who you could actually ask questions of,” she said.
“We teach existing brokers how to recognise and understand the behaviours behind a successful person and someone who is going to flag in those first few months.”
Once qualified, mortgage brokers can act as mentors to their colleagues using their own program or Simply Mentoring’s ‘Success is a Choice’ course.
Ms Hambleton O’Grady said the ‘Success is a Choice’ program assists those new to the mortgage broking industry overcome “roadblocks in the way of success”.
“One is confidence, one is that product knowledge, one is not understanding that you’re in sales, and one is not knowing how to structure a business,” she said.
“The program is written around those four areas – getting the business ready, getting it sales ready, getting yourself client ready, and getting yourself product ready.
“We teach brokers the four key ingredients for success – the four behaviours that need to be in place for someone to continually have success.”
