Making headlines today, The Australian Financial Review has reported that the banks could use the latest Murray-Darling water crisis as an excuse to tighten lending to farmers.
According to the paper, farmers have already seen the banks clamp down on lending to irrigators and the Murray-Darling Basin Authority’s recommendation to remove up to 4,000 gigalitres of water entitlements could make this worse.

But federal water minister Tony Burke told the paper he would be surprised to see the banks tighten lending to customers and largely expected them to continue to judge each customer on a case-by-case basis.
