Brokers top choice for buyers

Home buyers are more inclined to seek out the advice of a broker than go direct to a lender, new research has found.

According to Mortgage Choice’s First Home Owner survey, more than 40 per cent of respondents said their favourite point of contact for mortgage advice was a broker, followed by a lender.

Parents came in third with 19 per cent of respondents saying they would go to their family for mortgage advice.

These statistics were widely supported by Aussie chief executive officer Stephen Porges who said brokers will remain the go-to source for mortgage advice for the forseeable future.

Speaking to The Adviser, Mr Porges said buyers preferred to use brokers over lenders or the internet, as "people crave fae-to-face interaction".

”Yes, you can get leads from online, but not a lot more than that. Mortgages are incredibly complicated and people want a personalised service,” he said.

“There are some groups that believe the internet can offer everything a broker can, but this is simply not the case.”

Mr Porges said the internet was still 20 years away from becoming a comprehensive and reliable mortgage channel.

“At some stage it will be a stronger channel. Right now however, it is a lead channel, it is not a fulfilment channel."
