The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has warned the public to be wary of an email claiming to be from Sydney Credit Union.

The email, which contains references to ASIC chairman Greg Medcraft claims recipients are entitled to a significant compensation payment.
According to a media statement from ASIC, the email is a scam and anyone who receives it is being urged to delete it immediately.
“Scams aim to trick you into providing payments in advance or your personal details. Scammers may use fake websites, links or logos as well as the names of real businesses. They may even pretend to be from a government agency or financial institution to appear genuine,” ASIC commissioner Peter Kell said.
Consumers are encouraged to conduct some basic checks before acting on an email or phone call out of the blue, including deleting any emails that may appear “unusual”, he said.
