Men feel the pinch of household stress

Paying off the mortgage is having a significant impact on the mental health of Australian men, a new study has revealed.

The study looked into the long term effects of housing stress on wellbeing and found that it affected men twice as much as women.

‘‘We found that in the first 12 months or so women suffered a sharper emotional blow than men, but they tended to acclimatise to the situation more quickly,’’ the co-author of the study Dr Emma Baker said.

‘‘But in the households where stress continued over time, men tended to continue further down the spiral. On average the decrease in their mental health scores was about twice that of women.’’

The study, to be presented at a housing conference hosted by the University of NSW next week, was based upon the responses of the 13,000 Australians who participated.
