Global asset management firm KKR has appointed former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull to an advisory role.

KKR & CO, a global asset management firm and parent company of non-bank lender Pepper Money, has appointed former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull to the role of global senior advisor, effective from 1 June.

Mr Turnbull served as prime minister from September 2015 to August 2018 before being deposed in a leadership spill, which saw former treasurer Scott Morrison assume office.

Mr Turnbull’s appointment marks his return to the corporate world, with the former prime minister having served as managing director of Goldman Sachs Australia from 1997 to 2001, prior to entering parliament in 2004 as a member for the Sydney electorate of Wentworth.

Mr Turnbull was also an investor in one of Australia’s first internet service providers, OzEmail, reportedly buying a stake for $500,000 in 1994, which he sold for an estimated $57 million to MCI Worldcom in 1998.

During his time in politics, Mr Turnbull served as minister for environment and water in the Howard Government from January 2007 to December 2007, before becoming opposition leader in September 2008.

Mr Turnbull was deposed as opposition leader in December 2009 by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and later served as minister for communications from September 2013 to September 2015 in the Abbott Government.
