After having run around 500 kilometres for his Run Rocket Run challenge last year, Cottam decided to push his limits further in 2024 – testing his resilience and raising money for Invictus Australia.
Cottam – a military veteran who is paralysed in his left arm as a result of spinal nerve damage from a motor vehicle accident that resulted in brachial plexus palsy – started his long-distance challenge in Western NSW on 26 October.
He ran approximately 80 kilometres a day over the following week – including around the iconic Mount Panorama in Bathurst – before finishing in Sydney CBD on Friday (1 November).
During the run, he was joined by several friends and colleagues – including colleagues from Resimac and his physiotherapist.
The ex-military athlete said the Run Rocket Run challenge aims to push his physical limits while raising money for veterans.
This year, Cottam is aiming to raise $56,000 for Invictus Australia, an organisation dedicated to supporting veterans and their families.
The charity is particularly close to Cottam’s heart as he is a veteran of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.
Speaking about his experience after completing the challenge, he said: “Whilst I was doing it tough and having to dig deep for seven days to complete the 560km, too many of our veterans are having to do it tough every day, due to ongoing physical and mental injuries. They need our help.”
Cottam has completed 1,410 kilometres in running challenges over the past three years, running up to 200 kilometres a week, raising vital funds for Invictus Australia to support veterans and their families through the healing power of sport.
“Running has transformed my life, allowing me to overcome obstacles and inspire others,” he said.
“This challenge is about more than just physical limits; it’s about supporting those who have fought for our country and continue to fight their own battles.”
Run Rocket Run is supported by Resimac, Optus, Momentum Media, Parramatta Jaguar Land Rover, Wise Physiotherapy, and Whiskey & Friends.
