A greater percentage of borrowers are in arrears in Tasmania than in any other state, new research has revealed.

According to a recent report by Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services, loans greater than 30 days in arrears totalled 1.64 per cent in Tasmania, slightly higher than the 1.63 per cent recorded in New South Wales.
Tasmania’s Dowsing Point topped the list of the nation’s 10 worst-performing postcodes in the fourth quarter of 2012, edging out Nelson Bay, NSW.
That said, seven of those 10 worst-performing postcodes were in New South Wales, according to the December arrears data.
Loans underlying Australian prime residential mortgage-backed securities greater than 30 days in arrears increased between November 2012 and December 2012, with the prime Standard & Poor’s Mortgage Performance Index at 1.31 per cent, compared with 1.26 per cent in November.
