Job market shrinks

Job ads continued to fall in July but the overall rate of decline has slowed compared to previous months, ANZ’s Job Ads data showed yesterday.

The total number of jobs advertised was down by a seasonally adjusted 0.3 per cent to 261,936 per week. This followed a sharper fall of three per cent in June.

The figure was still 5.5 per cent higher than 12 months ago.

ANZ head of Australian economics Warren Hogan said the data was indicative of a softening in hiring intentions across the country.

“The level of job advertisements remains at high levels, particularly internet ads,” he said.

“However, recent trends in job advertisements suggest that we will see an easing of employment growth in coming quarters, consistent with the slowing in domestic economic conditions,” he said.
