Australians continue to shy away from property commitments: ABS

The number of Australians who committed to a home loan declined again in June to just 50,294.

This represented a fall of 3.7 per cent from May and 24.7 per cent from the same time last year, ABS data showed today.

Finance commitments for the purchase of new dwellings was the only category of financing to record an increase in June, it rose by 6.9 per cent from May.

Despite growing rental returns, financing commitments for investment properties also declined by 0.3 per cent to $5.580 billion, compared to $8.102 billion in June 2007.
