ING DIRECT backs move to ‘adviser’

Lisa Claes, executive director mortgages at ING DIRECT, has voiced her support for the industry’s transition to professional credit advisers.

Speaking at a Connective roundtable discussion last week, Ms Claes said it was important for brokers to start seeing themselves as advisers.

“The reason borrowers come to brokers is to get advice – advice on the best product for their needs. Brokers are already providing advice to some extent, so there is no reason why the industry should not call themselves professional advisers,” she said.

However, Ms Claes warned brokers to make sure they do not confuse providing credit advice with financial advice.

“It is important for brokers to be good at advising their clients on the right mortgage product without dipping their toe into professional advice on finance,” she said.
