ANZ to donate $50k towards flood relief

by Adrian Suljanovic9 minute read

The major bank has announced that it will donate $50,000 to assist flood-affected communities of Derby and Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley region.

The $50,000 donation is set to be distributed across the Lord Mayor’s Distress Fund, the Leedal Foundation, and the Foundation for Indigenous Sustainable Health (FISH).

Working in conjunction with the Western Australian government, the Lord Mayor’s Distress Fund is assisting in immediate recovery efforts. Meanwhile, the Leedal Foundation has partnered with local organisations to organise help for flood-impacted citizens particularly in the Far North of the region.

According to the major bank, the donation will also be “critical” in distributing children’s school packs, educational resources for teachers, and reading books for schools severely affected by the flooding.

ANZ general manager, Western Australia, Kathleen Jahour said: “The scale of this flooding has become widespread since we announced our initial relief measures and this is yet another way we can help the community recover.

“The Kimberley community have been resilient in coming together during this difficult time.

“We understand the impact that disasters like this have on the community and we want our customers to know that we will keep supporting them as the recovery continues.”

This donation is just part of the financial assistance efforts provided by the big four major banks, which rolled out relief measures for their customers in the Kimberley region in early January 2023.

ANZ’s contribution to the relief measures was offering short-term payment relief on home/personal loans, credit cards, and some business loans along with waiving fees for restructuring business loans and for early-term deposits.

NAB offered loan deferrals or reduced payment arrangements for home, personal, and some business loans as well as deferring upcoming credit card repayments and waiving certain fees and charges.

Along with this, NAB opened applications for $1,000 emergency grants for customers impacted by ex-tropical cyclone Ellie.

Westpac offered similar deferral payments for loans, along with 90-day deferrals for credit card repayments, early withdrawals for term deposit funds without interest rate reductions, fee-free restructuring for businesses, and business customers with merchant facilities are eligible for assistance including up to three months of monthly terminal access fee refunds.

The Commonwealth Bank (CBA) extended its Emergency Assistance services to the Kimberley region as well, offering customers customised payment arrangements for home/personal loans, credit cards, and temporary overdrafts.

Customers who have taken out Home Insurance distributed by CommBank are also eligible to receive emergency accommodation.
