The long-serving bank executive and interim CEO has confirmed he will retire next month after the new CEO takes over.
Customer-owned lender Beyond Bank has announced that its interim CEO and long-serving executive, Wayne Matters, will retire on 24 April after almost 24 years with the bank.
Matters, who has been in the interim CEO position since October 2024, will hand over the reins to David Marshall (currently the CEO of banking technology provider Ultradata) when he commences as Beyond Bank’s CEO on 26 March.
In order to ensure a smooth leadership transition, Matters will support Marshall over a four-week handover period at the bank’s Adelaide headquarters.
Veteran banker Matters is one of Beyond Bank’s longest-serving executives and first joined in 2001 as chief financial officer (CFO).
Since then, he has held a number of leadership roles, including company secretary and deputy CEO.
During his tenure, he has sat on several industry working groups, supported community initiatives, and oversaw the bank’s early work in the establishment of a climate-reporting framework, Beyond Bank noted in a statement.
The incoming CEO has more than 35 years of experience in Australia’s banking sector, having previously been CEO of Defence Bank and Hume Bank and prior to that, holding senior executive positions at both Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) and Westpac.
Confirming the retirement of Matters, the chair of Beyond Bank, Sam Andersen, said: “It is with both sadness and gratitude that we say goodbye to Wayne but we wish him all the very best for a long, healthy and happy retirement.
“Wayne’s commitment to diligent financial governance has kept our financial position strong over many years, and we are truly grateful to him for leading this area so capably.
“He has also made a substantial contribution to our culture across more than two decades, championing diversity and inclusion as well as advocating strongly for the Bank’s leadership development initiatives.”
