Younger Australians falling in and out of love, and their homes

More young Australians are embarking on home ownership than at any other time in history, research by Flinders University Academics revealed today.

But according to the academics, they’re also having more difficulty sustaining their purchases.

“Our research suggests that the real challenge for governments into the future is not to help more people become home purchasers, but to sustain home ownership,” Dr Debbie Faulkner, co-author of the research project, said.

According to Ms Faulkner, despite people entering home ownership at younger ages, they are falling out of home ownership largely due to divorce or separation, and are therefore struggling to maintain mortgage payments.

She suggests it might be appropriate to redirect or review the first home buyers grant to help those at risk of losing homes rather than accelerating entry for would-be buyers.
