Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the number of dwellings approved fell 7.8 per cent in February 2012 following a rise of 1.1 per cent in January.
New South Wales was responsible for the national downturn, recording a 41.2 per cent reduction in approvals.
Approvals rose in Queensland by 13.0 per cent, South Australia 10.1 per cent, Tasmania 10 per cent, 5.7 per cent in Western Australia and 1.1 per cent in Victoria.
