Writing a winning submission

Writing a winning submission

Nominations are well under way for the 2014 Better Business Awards and as many individuals and groups move through to the submission stage, here are the judge’s top tips for writing a winning submission.

Tip 1: keep it simple

Using feedback from the Australian Broking Awards and other industry award programs, we have streamlined the judging process as we understand writing these submissions is one of many jobs on a long to-do list. For this reason, we have set a strict word limit of 300 words per question. While this reduces submission size, it also means that answers need to be succinct and relevant. The use of bullet points is encouraged and ensures that all statements made relate directly to the question being answered.

Example:

Q: Describe your point of different/unique selling point
•    Customer engagement
•    Latest technology
•    Diversified offering

Use dot points to list what makes your company unique then go into further detail about one or two main factors.

Tip 2: Use supporting documents wisely

For many of the categories, you will be able to provide up to five supporting documents. However, this does not mean that you must provide supporting documents. Only use supporting evidence that directly relates to the question and has been explicitly referenced when answering. Supporting documents will be judged on their relevance to the corresponding answer and irrelevant or unjustified documents will be marked down.

Tip 3: Be consistent

Be consistent, especially when entering loan volumes and figures. To ensure you are judged accurately, ensure you provide figures as they are stated in each question. Questions that require a figure or number to be provided will provide an example of how the figure is to be recorded. By following this guide you can ensure your figures will be judged equally and accurately.

Tip 4: Pay attention to the judging criteria

For each category, entrants will be provided with judging criteria that outlines the number of marks that will be allocated for each question. Some categories will have more emphasis on key business metrics, while other categories may be predominately focused on the short answer questions.

By using the judging criteria as a guide, you will be able to allocate appropriate time to each section of the submission. This will help ensure the greatest possible outcome for your submission.

These tips will hopefully make the submission process a little easier. However, if you have any questions that relate to a specific category or further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the events team on 02 9922 3300 or visit www.betterbusinesssummit.com.au
