This year, as the country adopted new ways of working and began consuming more content online, we experienced a spike in podcast listens and engagement.
Here, we reveal the top five podcasts of the year:
1. How this broker joined the billion-dollar club
Broker: Josh Bartlett, Mortgage Advice Bureau (previously Loan Market Bayside)
Date of release: 7 January 2020
Right at the beginning of the year, when the country was facing bushfires, and COVID-19 had not yet reared its head in Australian shores, I sat down with Josh Bartlett to discuss how he had managed to settle more than $1 million in loans over his nine-year broking career.
Having last appeared on Elite Broker in 2017, Josh returned to the podcast to discuss how he had fine-tuned his business strategy to consistently hit targets, why he considered himself a “mortgage psychologist”, and how he applies his skills from his previous career as a personal trainer to write loans.
Josh also shared:
- Where his client referrals come from
- How he divides work among his team
- Why he shifted his focus to first home buyers in the last year

In early March, while we were in the midst of the Better Business Awards 2020, I caught up with veteran broker Anthony Alabakov to chat about his 20-year career and how the mortgage broking industry has evolved over time.
The CEO of Victoria-based brokerage My Mortgage Freedom share how he went from a fledging broker to finding the freedom to launch his own business, how he manages his team and his book as it expands into new markets, and the importance of fostering a positive culture within his business.

Another popular podcast from January of this year was the Elite Broker we recorded with Nick Reilly, co-founder and managing director of mortgage broking and financial planning firm Inovayt.
