Mr Burns joins Aussie after seven years at CommSec, where he is currently general manager of customer experience, responsible for the end-to-end user experience of CommSec's customers.
He previously served as head of strategy and head of marketing at CommSec.
Aussie executive chairman John Symond said Mr Burns would be filling a critical role for the group.
"As a member of the executive management team, Richard will be responsible for protecting and growing the Aussie brand while at the same time strengthening our digital effectiveness and presence with innovative technology," Mr Symond said.
"Richard is an impressive senior executive, and without doubt has the right cultural fit, vision, experience and drive to lead our marketing, digital and IT teams."
Mr Burns said he was delighted to be joining an iconic Australian brand.
"Leading the IT, digital and marketing teams will be a great challenge, and one that will allow me to draw upon my experience in each of these three areas," he said.
Mr Burns will lead a team of more than 40 people in his new role, which will start on February 9.
